What Pacific Time actually covers

"Pacific Time" is a nickname, not a single zone. The canonical Pacific Time zone in the IANA database is America/Los_Angeles, and Vancouver, Seattle, San Francisco, Portland and Tijuana either share it or behave identically to it. It is Pacific Standard Time (PST, UTC−8) in winter and Pacific Daylight Time (PDT, UTC−7) in summer.

A useful warning: several places that look Pacific on a map are not on Pacific Time. Alaska is on Alaska Time (AKST/AKDT, UTC−9/−8), Hawaii is on Hawaii-Aleutian Standard Time (HST, UTC−10, no daylight saving), and Arizona is on Mountain Standard Time (MST, UTC−7, no daylight saving) — so Phoenix sits one hour *behind* Seattle even though it is further east.

PST vs PDT: when the clocks change

Pacific daylight saving time starts on the second Sunday in March, when clocks jump from 02:00 to 03:00 local, and ends on the first Sunday in November, when clocks fall back from 02:00 to 01:00. That is roughly 26 weeks of the year when the United States and Canada are on PDT, and the other 26 weeks on PST.

The two-week window in early March and the one in early November are the awkward ones: the United States has already switched while Canada has not, or vice versa. This converter reads the rules directly from the IANA database for every date, so it stays correct even inside those in-between weeks when a hardcoded "US rules" table would be wrong.

Pacific Time compared with the neighbouring zones

North American time zones step in clean one-hour increments, which makes the arithmetic easy once you know the anchor. Pacific Time is three hours behind Eastern Time and two hours behind Central Time in winter, and the same three-hour gap holds in summer because the US and Canada switch on the same dates.

Against the rest of the world the numbers get larger: Pacific Time is 8 hours behind London in winter and 7 hours behind in summer, and 16 hours behind Sydney during the northern summer and 17 hours behind during the northern winter.

  • PT → Mountain Time (Denver, Calgary): 1 hour ahead
  • PT → Central Time (Chicago, Mexico City): 2 hours ahead
  • PT → Eastern Time (New York, Toronto): 3 hours ahead
  • PT → London (winter): 8 hours ahead · (summer): 7 hours ahead
  • PT → Berlin (winter): 9 hours ahead · (summer): 8 hours ahead
  • PT → Dubai: 11 hours ahead · Sydney: 16–17 hours ahead
  • PT → Tokyo: 17 hours ahead · Los Angeles to Tokyo is the next day

Best times to meet across the Pacific

If you are scheduling between the US West Coast and Europe, the workable windows are narrow but real. A 09:00 Pacific start lands at 17:00 in London during winter and 16:00 during summer — late but inside working hours. A 07:00 start lands at 15:00 in London, and a 06:00 start at 14:00. For the reverse direction, 08:00 to 11:00 Pacific works for a 16:00 to 19:00 London slot.

Against Asia-Pacific the arithmetic inverts: 08:00 in Los Angeles is 01:00 the next day in Tokyo, but 17:00 in Tokyo is 01:00 in Los Angeles, which is the overlap most West Coast teams settle on. The meeting planner on this site ranks all 24 hours for you and highlights the slots where everybody is inside 09:00–17:00 local time.

Frequently asked questions

What is the time difference between Pacific Time and Eastern Time?

Eastern Time is three hours ahead of Pacific Time all year round, because both the United States and Canada switch to daylight saving on the same dates. 09:00 in Los Angeles is 12:00 in New York in winter and in summer.

Is Pacific Time UTC−8 all year?

No. Pacific Standard Time is UTC−8 and runs from early November to mid-March; Pacific Daylight Time is UTC−7 and runs from mid-March to early November. Arizona (including Phoenix) and Hawaii are the exceptions — they stay on UTC−7 and UTC−10 respectively and never observe daylight saving.

When does Pacific Daylight Time start and end?

PDT starts on the second Sunday in March, when clocks jump from 02:00 to 03:00 local, and ends on the first Sunday in November, when clocks fall back from 02:00 to 01:00 local.

Is Seattle on Pacific Time?

Yes. Seattle uses America/Los_Angeles, the same zone as Los Angeles, San Francisco, Portland and Vancouver, so it observes the identical PST/PDT switch.

What time is it in Los Angeles right now?

The live Pacific clock at the top of this page shows the current Los Angeles time and updates in your browser. It displays the current abbreviation (PST or PDT) and the UTC offset so you always know which one you are reading.
